Pottery Production Information
Nancy and David Pridham share the creation of pottery at Pridham Studio.
Their partnership is a balance between Nancy's artistic energy and
David's practical expertise. Historically, ceramic art has been built
by one person and painted by another. The Pridhams are happy to continue
that tradition.
David's thrown pieces are technically precise with a character suited for daily use. His handbuilt forms are slab rolled using a white earthenware
clay. With techniques learned while visiting Talavera potters in Mexico,
David builds his own plaster molds to support the soft clay.
The skill and experience required in making good quality low-fire
pottery is rewarded by the brilliant underglaze colours that can be
achieved. Nancy develops the designs, and handpaints and signs each
piece. She paints the design on the entire front and back of the footless
bowls and plates. The final clear glaze gives a smooth, seamless feel.
You will want to use the pottery both for everyday function, as well
as display.
Non-toxic food-safe glazes are used exclusively in this oven-safe
work. Although they can be put in your dishwasher, as with any favourite
dishes handwashing is recommended.
About
the Artist
Excited by every kiln opening and new canvas, Nancy Pridham builds
beauty and function into her pottery and paintings. She graduated
from Capilano College in Media Arts, studied through the Emily Carr
College of Art and Design, and was mentored for four years by MSA
artist Bette Rothwell. Nancy started working with clay in Mexico doing
primitive pit firing and has been instructed and inspired by Talavera
potters. She has been working professionally as an artist since 1988
creating pieces that strike deeply resonant chords in her audience.
With an established career as a painter, Nancy moved into the world
of ceramics in 1999 and now combines the two in her distinctive style.
Paintings that celebrate the joyous observation of life and pottery
recognized for its energetic brushstrokes and rich colour have become
her hallmarks. "Painting--whether on canvas, wood, or clay--is
a vehicle for me to express my personal mythology, where the symbols
include coyotes, flowers, human forms, chickens, geometry, and especially
colour."
Her works are in galleries and collections internationally. She has
participated in numerous one-woman and group shows, and has received
awards from the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Oil Pastel Association
of America, and regional and provincial exhibitions.
Nancy is a prolific artist with a spirit of vision and freshness.
Her passion imbues the range of her work as she takes pleasure in
the process of creating.
